Development and technical design of new full‑steel lattice towers

Construction of the High‑Voltage LineSection Sihlhalden–Kilchberg

Project Description

As part of the Obfelden–Samstagern grid project, Swissgrid is upgrading the existing 150‑kV line between Sihlhalden and Kilchberg to 220 kV. The aim is to ensure long‑term security of supply for the greater Zurich area and the city of Zurich. The new line partly follows the existing route and will be constructed from spring 2025 until the end of 2026.

Contribution of Future Grid Solutions

Future Grid Solutions, commissioned by ewz, contributed to the development and technical design of the new full‑steel monopole towers. The collaboration took place jointly with ewz, Swissgrid, and the steel supplier from Turkey. FGS was involved in:

  • Planning and development of the tower structures.
  • Coordination of technical requirements and design specifications.
  • Interface management between Swissgrid and the steel supplier.
  • Quality assurance and technical consulting during implementation.
Project Highlights
  • Eleven modern full‑steel monopole towers will be constructed along the Sihlhalden–Kilchberg section.
  • The towers are significantly slimmer than conventional lattice structures and reach a height of nearly 60 meters.
  • Despite their size, they integrate harmoniously into the landscape and meet the highest technical and aesthetic standards.
  • Approximately 385 tons of steel and 2,000 tons of concrete will be used for construction.
